Topic 124: do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

When asked about whether it is more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics, quite a few people would support the history and literature studying, for they have always being documenting the civilization of the culture. But others have a negative attitude. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with this statement. Among countless factors which influence my decision, there are two conspicuous aspects as follows.

The first reason can be seen by every person is that science and mathematics, especially the latter one, are the basis of modern technologies, which are becoming increasingly important in everyday life. Apart from things on everyday use such as the TV sets, cars, computers and internet technology, which are all based on the progress of science and math, modern medicine, are also significant in helping us with a healthier body and a longer life. Further more, we believe that scientists will help us solve some temporary problems such as pollution. For that matter, it is safe to say that science and mathematics are necessary parts of our life.

The next reason for my trend to disagree this statement is that literature and history are no more useful than an advisor or a secretary during the civilization of human culture. Obviously historians and authors have helped document the changes from prehistoric times to the present, however, it is scientists who made these changes happen. Take the Industrial Revolution for an example, historians documented it, while it was scientists who developed and applied the technology into industries that could be the source of the revolution. To some extent, like the Industrial Revolution, every change during the civilization is accompanied by the developed of science and then became history.

While science and math have helped raise our standard of living, historians and authors have helped the life more colorful with description and imagination. Our society would not be complete without them. However, if I had to choose an emphasis for our school system, science and math would have to be at the forefront because they are such an integral part of our everyday（daily） lives.
